Why "Calm Sloth"?

If you're reading this at 9pm wondering how to fill tomorrow's classes, take a breath — you're in the right place. Teaching a language is one of the most demanding jobs in any school. Between differentiating for every level, grading, covering for absent colleagues, and building materials from scratch, it's easy to run on empty. The sloth is our reminder that effective teaching doesn't have to mean frantic teaching. When you slow the pace, stay in the target language, and let students absorb Spanish through understandable messages, the calm classroom and the high-achieving classroom turn out to be the same room.

Our teaching philosophy

Calm Sloth Spanish is built on second-language acquisition research. We believe students acquire language primarily through comprehensible input — messages they understand — rather than by memorizing grammar rules in isolation. In practice that means our lessons lean on stories, repetition of high-frequency vocabulary, visuals, and lots of meaningful listening and reading before output is ever forced. You can read more about this in our guide to comprehensible input.

This approach goes by a few names you may know: comprehension-based and communicative language teaching (CCLT), proficiency-based instruction, and broadly "acquisition-driven instruction." Whatever the label, the principle is the same — keep it understandable, keep it meaningful, and keep students engaged.
